Anthocyanins and the Therapeutic Potential of Purple Weed

We all love purple pot strains. They look beautiful, smell amazing, and often have some of the best flavors you could imagine. But have you ever wondered what actually makes your buds produce those rich, deep violet tones? Common knowledge is that growing in colder temps is an attribute; and while this is true, the real answer is a bit more complex than that.

Aside from cold temperatures – which I’ll discuss in more detail later as – the biological reason cannabis ends up being purple is because of a class of pigmented flavonoids known as Anthocyanins. These compounds are responsible for the fruity/berry flavor profiles and those beautiful purple, blue, and magenta tones we see in a lot of top-shelf flower strains.

Some well-known and very popular purple strains are Grand Daddy Purps (GDP), Purple Haze, Mendocino Purps, Purple Kush, C4-Matic, and Dark Karma. Most purple strains are indicas or indica-dominant hybrids. Purple Haze is of the few exceptions to that rule; haze strains, like lemon haze and silver haze, are usually straight sativas.

Purple weed is amazing, but when it comes to high-quality flower in general, we love it all! What are Anthocyanins?

The word “anthocyanin” is derived from two Greek words – Anthos meaning Flower and Kyanos meaning blue. Although we typically refer to cannabis with anthocyanins as “purple”, they can actually present in a variety of colors from deep reds to purples and even blue tones. For the sake of uniformity in the article, we will refer to this entire range of colors as “violet”.

Anthocyanins are water-soluble pigment molecules belonging to a larger class of compounds known as Flavonoids. So far, there are over 400 types of anthocyanins that have been identified. They are not found in all plants, but in the ones in which they are present, they occur throughout the entire plant. This includes the leaves stems, roots, flowers, and fruits.

Anthocyanins come from anthocyanidins when excess sugar is produced by the plant, which becomes trapped as nutrient transport slows down. Although this only happens when temperatures drop slightly, sunlight is still a necessity to achieving the vibrant color that anthocyanins are famous for. Freezing temps will destroy the pigment, but when temps are hot or too warm, plants will have excess chlorophyll, giving them those vibrant, green summertime tones. So, in other words, the conditions need to be just right for anthocyanins to flourish. Think fall colors – when it’s hot the trees are green but if it’s too cold, the leaves fall off completely. For the beautiful colors, you need to find that sweet zone.

Anthocyanins are known to be beneficial for human health but they also have a specific purpose within the plant, which is to protect photosynthetic tissues from different types of light stressors. It blocks certain intensities and spectrums that could harm the plants, basically acting as natural sunblock.

It’s also believed that anthocyanin attracts pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, while simultaneously deterring unwanted insects from laying eggs on the leaves. Pollinators are known to associate vibrant colors with healthy flowers, while other, unwanted insects will notice the dark pigments and think the plant is dying.

Making Pot Purple

Ah, yes… “purple pot”. People LOVE “purple pot”, me included. While the immediately noticeable effects aren’t much different than what you would feel from other strains of the same caliber, they do have some amazing flavor profiles.

Just like any other plant in nature, violet cannabis is created by cultivating certain strains in the correct environment. You can’t just take any strain, grow it in the cold, and have “purple buds”. You need certain strains, those containing anthocyanins with the predisposition to turn violet, and they need to be exposed to just the right level of cool temps at the correct point in the flowering stage. Cool enough that the purple and blue tones are enhanced without being so cold that the plant dies.

The pigment can also travel through plant, into the trichome stalks and even into the trichome head itself. Because of the potency of these pigments, cannabis only needs to product a minimal amount of Anthocyanins to get a noticeable, deep violet color.

What are the Health Benefits?

Since we humans have a symbiotic relationship with the world around us, even the background compounds like flavonoids can have major benefits for our health. When it comes to “purple foods” containing Anthocyanins, many are already categorized as “superfoods” with a slew of different therapeutic uses.

Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants that inhibit the production of cell-damaging free radicals. In addition, these compounds are known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, antibacterial, and anti-tumoral benefits. According to a 2017 study, “Anthocyanins are the value-added colorants that can be used for preventing several diseases, including CVDs, cancers, diabetes, some metabolic diseases, and microbial infection.”

Substances rich in anthocyanins have been used for centuries to treat many different conditions relating to the blood vessels, including high blood pressure and diabetic retinopathy. Because of their anti-viral and antibacterial properties, they’re also used to treat flus, colds, and urinary tract infections. Anthocyanins have also been linked to increased longevitycardiovascular healthcancer prevention and dementia.

One especially interesting use for anthocyanins, is to improve vision. “Visual acuity can be markedly improved through administration of anthocyanin pigments to animal and human subjects, and the role of these pigments in enhancing night vision or overall vision has been particularly well documented,” stated a 2004 study.

Other Plants Containing Anthocyanins

Although cannabis strains with Anthocyanins have quite a loyal following, it’s only one of many plants containing this pigmented flavonoid. Anthocyanins are a type of dietary flavonoid also found in berries, red onions, black soybeans, kidney beans, pomegranates, grapes (and wine), tomatoes, acai, bilberry, chokeberry, elderberry, tart cherries, black rice, and many other plants with the violet pigment.

Anthocyanins are found in the highest concentrations in flowers and fruits, in the call vacuole. They are also found in leaves, stems, and roots, however. In those plant parts, Anthocyanins will mostly be in the outer layers which is why you may see violet tones over the entire plant.

There are numerous different types of Anthocyanins, and the ones that are most frequently found in nature are the glycosides of cyanidindelphinidinmalvidinpelargonidinpeonidin, and petunidin. During photosynthesis, 2% of all hydrocarbons are converted into flavonoids and their derivatives. Not all plants have flavonoids that will develop into Anthocyanins. In cacti, for example, the hydrocarbons turn into betalains. Anthocyanins and betalains have never been found in the same plant.

Final Thoughts

To quickly sum it all up, purple buds are ah-maz-ing! Strains that are rich in Anthocyanins have great flavor profiles, usually earthy with hints of berry, they have numerous different health benefits, and the icing on the cake is that they look good and always impress.

The Real Difference Between Indica and Sativa Strains

When shopping for cannabis products, be it online or at a dispensary, you’ve likely noticed that aside from visibly posted THC content, the other way they are typically categorized is by whether they are indica, sativa, or hybrid. Most people use these groups as a benchmark for gauging potency and effects. But how accurate is this method, and what are the true differences between these strain types?

Indica, or “in da couch” as it is casually referred to, is said to be the stronger of the two, delivering super relaxing, often sluggish, “couch-locked” effects. On the contrary, sativa strains have the reputation of hitting users with those creative, lively, and energetic highs. This has been widely accepted as fact among cannabis consumers for decades now. If you have ever been to a dispensary, it’s highly likely you’ve had a budtender recommend strains based on these classifications (spoiler alert, they will almost always recommend an indica… sometimes a hybrid).

However, as research continues to emerge about the plant, it turns out the real differences between strains is the specific blend of compounds (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, etc.) in each particular batch of flowers. As a matter of fact, the terms “sativa” and “indica” are rooted in geography and botany, having really nothing to do with what effects a user will experience. It’s like comparing apples around the world. In some regions they grow smaller or come in different colors, but they’re all still apples – just with a slight bit of variation based on where they are from. So for the sake of this article, think of cannabis like any other flowering plant, fruit, or vegetable.

Cannabis is a multifaceted plant with hundreds of active and inactive compounds working together synergistically. To minimize all that chemistry down to indica vs sativa makes very little sense and is actually, totally inaccurate. To learn more about the cannabis plant, make sure to subscribe to The Delta 8 Weekly Newsletter, your top source for all things weed-related as well as exclusive deals on delta-8 THCdelta 10thcvthcpthc-ohhc and even legal hemp-derived delta-9 THC.

What Are Indicas?

Cannabis indica refers to the intoxicating variety of cannabis that was originally discovered in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Northern India, where it grew comfortably in between 30-50 degrees latitude. In addition to being smoked, Cannabis indica was harvested for seeds, fiber, and hashish (hash) production (the world’s first cannabis concentrate). “Indica” technically means any plant that comes originally from India, although in the weed industry it has become synonymous with the stout, broad-leaf plants, believed to produce sedative effects with a powerful body high.

As far as cultivation goes, Indica plants are typically shorter and bushier with stout, wide leave and dense bulky nugs. There are many benefits to this smaller stature, first of which is that they require much less physical space to grow. They also flower considerably faster than Sativa strains, only taking about 6-8 weeks before you get a harvest. For these reasons, paired with the reputation of Indicas, they are most popular among modern growers and likely the reason you see more and more indica/hybrids on the market today.

More About Sativas

The exact origins of Sativa strains are less specific, although we do know that much of it hails from the latitudes of 0-30 degrees. Typically, it grew in warmer climates like Mexico, Columbia, Thailand, and Southeast Asia.  The term “sativa” was also used to describe hemp plants found throughout Europe, where it was cultivated for seeds, fiber, and other practical uses.

Sativa strains are associated with the uplifting “head high” that people claim makes them feel connected and euphoric. Again, these effects aren’t necessarily due to the fact that they are sativas and simply that, but rather because strains coming from those parts of the world may have different combinations of compounds than hardy, mountain Indica strains. My guess would be that it has a lot to do with the sun and warmth.

Sativa plants are tall and lanky. On average they get around 10-12 feet tall, although some can exceed 20 feet. The leaves are thin and pointed and the nugs produced by these strains are typically longer and fluffier than indica flowers. Sativas grow well outdoors and often require less maintenance than indica plants. Despite that, they are less popular for cultivators, especially those doing indoor and greenhouse grows.

Defining Hemp

Hemp is a term used to classify certain varieties of cannabis that have less than 0.3 percent THC (by dry weight). This is the legal standard by which hemp is defined in the United States and throughout most of the world, although some countries are leaning now towards a 1 percent cutoff. Generally speaking, Hemp is used to describe Cannabis types that are non-intoxicating and harvested for its industrial purposes.

There is evidence of hemp cultivation and use that dates back roughly 10,000 years, leading many to believe that hemp was the first crop ever grown and harvested by man. Because hemp is so versatile and can be used to create a multitude of essential items like food, textiles, housing material, plastic, and even biofuel, one can presume that hemp has been a catalyst for some of our most important inventions throughout history.

Hemp isn’t used only for industrial reasons though. Smokable hemp/CBD flower is growing trend that has really gained a lot of traction in the U.S. market these last couple of years; although they are by far not as popular as THC/marijuana strains. Feminized Cannabis sativa flower that produces low levels of THC, also produces smokable buds that taste, look, and smell just like the marijuana you would find at a dispensary or on the street.

The most obvious difference between the two is that hemp/CBD flower doesn’t get you high. It may feel relaxing in the same way that cigarettes are relaxing, but there are no actual psychoactive effects. Personally, I feel like most hemp flowers seem to have the same underlying flavor and there is much less terpene variety in these strains compared to marijuana. Hemp flowers certainly have their place in the market though and can be great for curbing anxiety and depression, relieving pain, treating neurological disorders, or just relaxing without the high if that’s what you’re into.

Understanding Hybrids

Hybrid is a relatively new term used to classify cannabis that is bred from parents of two different strains. Theoretically, a hybrid can offer users the most beneficial medical and recreational properties from both parents, but in reality, it depends entirely on which traits get passed down during the breeding process.

To further complicate the issue of hybrids, there is no scientific evidence to support this dichotomy of cannabis types because on a molecular level, indica and sativa strains don’t have patterns that differentiate the two “types” from each other anyway. From a chemical standpoint, most strains on the market today can be classified as hybrids. Because, just stop to think about how unlikely it is that you would come across a strain that has the original parent genetics from hundreds of years ago. Not only is that close to impossible, but you’d likely be disappointed with how unrefined those flowers were compared to what’s available today.

Hybrid stains that display more characteristics from either side of the spectrum are labeled “indica-dominant” or “sativa-dominant”. Common notes you may see on a flower label at a dispensary include a sativa/indica ratio – for example, 60/40 indica/sativa – or you may just see the percentage of the dominant characteristics – 80 percent indica, or 70 percent sativa.

It’s worth noting that hybrids don’t have to be a blend of sativa and indica. Breeders often use both indica parents, or pair sativas with each other. Jack’s Dream is a good example of this, using two very popular sativa strains – Jack Herer and Blue Dream – to create a super sativa hybrid. Or Bubba Purps, a combination of Pre 98 Bubba Kush and Granddaddy Purps, both of which are well-known indicas.

Cannabinoids, Terpenes, and The Entourage Effect

To find a strain that will provide you with specific effects, you have to search beyond indica and sativa and look at the entire package instead – strain name and genetics, terpene blends, and cannabinoid content. In reality, the entire indica vs sativa vs hybrid trend is basically just a big marketing ploy anyway.

The cannabis plant is composed of roughly 400 different compounds – over 100 cannabinoids and close to 150 terpenes have been identified so far. The two most abundant compounds are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). Strains that are high in THC are generally very low in CBD, and vice versa, although some 1:1 ratio strains do exist. Both indica and sativa strains can exhibit similar cannabinoid and terpene profiles.

Terpenes are a very large and diverse class of organic compounds that are produced by a wide variety of plants including herbs, trees, flowers, and fruit. In cannabis, they are secreted by the same glands that produce all the most dominant cannabinoids. If it weren’t for these flavorful, aromatic compounds, weed would be nowhere near as appealing as it is.

Not only do terps give cannabis its irresistible taste, but thanks to the entourage effect, they work synergistically with cannabinoids in the plant to offer us a better high and multitude of therapeutic benefits. Simply put, the entourage effect refers to the way different cannabinoidsterpenes, and flavonoids work together to offer health benefits you can only get when consuming the entire plant in its natural state. Even the slightest change in chemical profile (for example, switching out the limonene terp for myrcene, can result in noticeable changes in the way all the other compounds interact with each other, and thus, the effects felt but the consumer will vary as well.

Final Thoughts

To summarize, cannabis is so much more than just THC content, and indica versus sativa. With hundreds of active and inactive compounds all working together in this incredible plant, it’s no surprise that you get slightly different effects from every strain you consume. So, keep in mind that you’re short changing yourself and missing out on so many amazing flowers if you go straight for the indicas every time.

When to Start Flowering Cannabis

The flowering stage of cannabis growth (depending on strain) usually takes place from 8 to 11 weeks. The cannabis growth cycle consists of four stages: germination (3 to 10 days), seedling (2 to 3 weeks), vegetative (3 to 16 weeks) and finally culminates in flowering (6 to 12 weeks). Many new growers are unsure of […]

Introducing THCO Flower & THC-O Pre-Rolls

Have you tried smoking THC-O?
THC-O (AKA THC-O Acetate), the newest hemp-derived cannabinoid, is a unique, high-potency psychoactive compound. THCO is so strong, that many consider it to be even more potent than Delta-9 THC (the ‘regular’ cannabis-derived THC). But THCO is even more than that, as some report it to produce psychedelic and even spiritual experiences.

No doubt, this new ‘Spiritual THC’ is a game changer and in the few weeks since it has been first introduced to the market, it instantly made its way to become a best-seller. But what exactly is THCO? How does it feels like to smoke THC-O flower? and where can you buy high-quality THCO flower online?

While the actual sales of THCO flower only begun recently, we can already see massive sales coming its way. The reason why people are buying THC-O products, such as THC-O carts, THC-O tinctures, THC-O gummies and THC-O disposables, is because of thenew type of of ‘High’ it produces, much different than the one coming from other forms of THC, including Delta 8, Delta 10 THC and even Delta-9 THC. Unlike other forms of THC, THC-O will take more time to feel the effects, sometimnes up to 30 minutes, but when it comes, you can experience a different ball-game, very deep and slightly psychedelic by its nature.

To help you find the best THCO flower & pre-rolls, we have created a short list of premium products. Be advised that for every products we have included a coupon code, so make sure to use it, as it unlocks an additional discount. As always, the best Delta 8, Delta 10 THC, THCV & THC-O deals are reserved for our subscribers, so make sure to SUBSCRIBE to the Delta 8 Weekly newsletter today.

What exactly is THC-O

THC-O is a newly introduced high-potency cannabinoid. It is so strong, that many who have tried it claim that it is even stronger than Delta-9 THC. In addition, it is so strong and activates itself in a unique way, that some people have found it to be producing an almost spiritual & psychedelic experience.

How does it feels like to smoke THCO flower?

Unlike smoking regular cannabis or hemp flower, when using THCO flower or THCO pre-rolls, you can expect the effects to arrive somewhat slower, even up-to 30 minutes. However, once it arrives, the euphoria and other effects coming from smoking these buds, will most-likely last between 1 to 5 hours. In addition to feeling euphoric, you can expect to feel creative, energetic and sometimes even happy & silly (giggly). For some, the effects of using THC-O remind of using ‘Super-Sativa‘ products.

As it is afterall a cannabinoid, which means using it will produce different effects for different people, others claim that it makes them couch-lock and relaxed.

THCO flower and tolerance for Delta-9

Before smoking your first THCO flower you should be advised that your current level of Delta-9 tolerance might not have a bearing on THC-O. So do yourself a favor, start low and grow slow until you find your perfect comfort zone. As mentioned before, unlike regular hemp flowers, smoking THC-O flower might take some more time to feel the effects, to smoke and wait.

What is delta-8 THC?

The main question, is what is this delta-8 THC, and why is it anything to get excited about anyway? Delta-8 THC is a naturally occurring derivative of delta-9 THC, the standard THC associated with cannabis. Delta-9 THC doesn’t occur in large amounts in fresh flowers – a common misconception about cannabis. Instead, it’s precursor THCA, a non-psychoactive compound, is actually what is found in live plants. THCA decarboxylates into THC on its own by way of time and sunlight, but the process can be substantially speeded up by applying heat. In the process of decarboxylation, a C02 molecule is removed, creating the psychoactive delta-9.

Of course, we’re not talking about delta-9, we’re talking about delta-8 THC. When delta-9 THC comes into contact with oxygen, very small amounts of it oxidize to form delta-8 THC, making delta-8 THC a naturally occurring compound. The oxidation process involves electrons being removed, which actually ends up making delta-8 THC a far more stable compound than delta-9. This can be useful in terms of maintaining the composition of the molecule over longer periods of time.

Chemically, delta-8 THC and delta-9 THC are nearly identical. They both have the exact same chemical makeup of: C21H30O2, and the only actual difference is a double carbon bond, which is located in different places for the different compounds. For delta-9, it’s on the 9th carbon atom, and for delta-8, it’s on the 8th. Want to guess where it is for the synthetically made delta-10 THC? If you guessed the 10th atom on the chain, you’d be correct.

This minor difference doesn’t go unnoticed, although in many ways the compounds are more similar than different. Both delta-8 and delta-9 have been shown to help with nausea and vomiting, particularly associated with cancer and AIDS treatments, as well as appetite stimulation. Both have anti-inflammatory properties, have shown usefulness with neurodegenerative diseases and spastic disorders, and can benefit anxiety and insomnia issues.

In fact, it is here that delta-8 really shines, being associated with less anxiety and paranoia than standard delta-9, which makes it a better option for those who have issues with delta-9 anxiety. Delta-8 also supposedly produces a more clear-headed high than its counterpart, making it better for athletic activities. Another benefit for some, is that delta-8 THC comes with less psychoactive effect, which is beneficial for people looking for medical treatments, who don’t want to be out of their heads.

Is delta-8 THC illegal like delta-9?

This is a tricky question, and realistically, no matter how much its discussed and debated, there isn’t an official answer. There are a few things to consider though. And the first is that this debate wasn’t a debate at all, until the application of the 2018 US Farm Bill.

world delta-8 THC

Up until that bill, hemp production and manufacturing was illegal in the US, having been the product of large-scale smear campaigns, which, while actually focusing the attention of the population on the smokable aspect of cannabis, were really targeting the industrial hemp industry which threatened other large-scale enterprises, like paper industries (Hearst), plastic/chemical industries (Dupont), and as always, pharmaceutical industries, which are still fighting large-scale cannabis legalization today.

The 2018 US Farm Bill essentially reinstated an industry that had not only previously existed in the States, but which had been so important to the economy, that actual grow laws had been instituted back in colonial times, and by the time cannabis was illegalized, it was found in tons of medications on pharmacy shelves. The Farm Bill didn’t actually fully reinstate these things, but it did open the door for industrial hemp to be grown again, and for hemp products to be produced.

And that’s where delta-8 comes in. Delta-8 is a product of delta-9 THC, and can be sourced from any delta-9 THC, whether its in high-THC marijuana plants (.3%+), or low-THC hemp plants (.3%-). By using the THC in hemp plants, delta-8 THC can be synthesized within a legal loophole.

Hemp is defined as “the plant Cannabis Sativa L. and any part of that plant, including the seeds thereof and all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.” As a point of clarification – which also becomes important in this debate – this is referring only to naturally occurring derivatives, as it should be noticed that synthetic cannabinoids are not covered by this definition.

Synthetic cannabinoids never made it into the definition of hemp, and therefore remain under the definition of ‘tetrahydrocannabinols’, which can be found in DEA Controlled Substance Code Number 7370. As such, all synthetic cannabinoids, regardless of where in the plant they come from, what species of cannabis plant they come from, or in what quantities they exist, remain schedule 1 controlled substances.

In terms of delta-8, it is not technically synthetic, which makes it fall under the definition of ‘hemp’. On the other hand, it is naturally-occurring in such small amounts, that it must be synthesized with human processing help, which opens the door to it being considered a synthetic, which would illegalize it. As neither the DEA Interim Final Rule, or more recent USDA final rule, make any clarification on the definition of ‘synthetic’, delta-8 THC remains in legal gray area.

Who in the world smokes delta-8 THC?

Since it wasn’t a product to worry about before the last few years, not many countries have laws that specifically target delta-8, and many places, like the UK, also have contradictory laws that leave delta-8 in gray area, or mention it without giving any actual legality. As such, the question of who around the world smokes delta-8 THC is a strange question. A quick internet search will turn up plenty of online vendors for the product all over the world, but much like the early days of cannabis vaporizers, and edibles, the idea that something might be available, doesn’t mean it actually caught on.

Delta-8 THC is technically available in many places – at least as far as these online searches indicate. But there isn’t much evidence that the idea has taken off anywhere outside of the US. Or at least, not yet. There are questions being asked on reddit, which is always a good sign, and there are a few sparce articles from writers like myself in other locations – this too is an implication that its growing in the industry. After all, what we’re looking for, is it to be mentioned.

I got my first marijuana vaporizer back in the early 2000’s, and it was years before anyone else in the world cared about that. Just like, while it was more commonplace to deal with edibles early on in America, the idea only spread globally recently. In this way, the lack of global popularity of delta-8 THC is probably just about a lack of information about it, and the sheer fact that it hasn’t yet become the ‘next big thing’.

This doesn’t have anything to do with legalization either. Even in Canada, where cannabis is legal recreationally, delta-8 is not nearly as popular as America, and it can be seen in internet postings that there is still much confusion over what it is exactly, and where to get it. In fact, the main point of interest nearly anywhere in the world where a thread can be found on it, is about legality in that location. So in answer to the question ‘who in the world is smoking delta-8 THC’, the answer for now, is mostly Americans. With the growing mentions online in other countries indicating the buildup to a worldwide spread.

Conclusion

It can take time for some things to catch on. Especially when its legal standing is questionable, and it can’t be as easily self-made. However, the global illegal cannabis industry reminds us that regardless of illegality, things can definitely becomes popular worldwide. It will be interesting to see what happens with delta-8 in the future, if it becomes more popular, where that will be, and who in the world will be smoking delta-8 THC in a few years. For now, it’s mainly an American trend. However, America is quite the trend starter, and those trends tend to become pretty big everywhere in the world.

Delta 8 Flowers – Milder Than Cannabis, But Very Relaxing and Uplifting

When it comes to Delta-8 THC products, flowers are usually not the first choice, as this title reserved for Delta-8 THC vape cartridges and Delta 8 gummies. However, lately we have seen a rise of new Delta-8 THC infused hemp flowers (AKA Delta 8 Flowers), which offer us a new and improved way to get our Delta-8 THC, by smoking.

The new flowers have arrived

Not only is the quality of the new Delta 8 flowers is much better than what was offered only a few months ago, but also the price went down. As a result, currently you can get really good flowers for less than $650/lb (when using the 35% discount code, currently available to the subscribers of the the CBD Flowers Weekly newsletter).

The new Delta 8 flowers are hand-trimmed indoor hemp flowers, carefully treated with Delta-8 THC distillate and sometimes dusted with CBD or CBG Kief, for the extra touch. Unlike regular cannabis flowers, high in Delta-9 THC or high-CBD hemp flowers, the Delta 8 flowers are a twin-peak product. As such, they have high-levels of both Delta-8 THC and CBD (or CBG, depends on the hemp strain) which creates a category of its own.

That’s why smoking Delta-8 THC flowers is unique, both because Delta-8 is different than Delta-9 and also because of the twin-peak effect of the products. If you happen to like blended, enhanced or even infused products, these flowers are exactly what you are looking for.

Good Delta-8 flowers are an incredible experience. They allow you to experience a new high, milder than what regular THC offers, but very relaxing and uplifting. Delta-8 high also comes with less anxiety and paranoia, compared to Delta-. No wonder why so many cannabis and hemp users are shifting to Delta-8 THC lately.

AS always, the best hemp flower deals are reserved for the subscribers of the CBD Flowers Weekly newsletter, going out every Friday and Sunday. If you like to claim our exclusive 35% discount code, click HERE to subscribe, or use the form below.

Sinaloa Cartel Might Run Mexico’s New Cannabis Industry

As Mexico prepares to open its legal recreational cannabis industry, the question of who will really run it becomes relevant in a country dominated by drug cartels. New reports indicate the Sinaloa cartel is looking to take over Mexico’s new cannabis industry.

Are you the kind of person who stopped using cannabis because the THC was too much for you? Happens to a lot of people. For some, using delta-8 THC provides the same beneficial qualities, but with less anxiety and less psychoactive effect. If this sounds like something you could use, check out these Delta-8 THC deals, and give it a shot for yourself.

Just getting the laws through has proved to be quite a challenge for the Mexican government. Whether this is because of disputes between parties over things like taxation and local farmer protections, or over concerns about how this industry will fit into a cartel dominated country, is hard to say. As the next deadline for legislation looms ahead, reports indicate the Sinaloa cartel has made it clear that when Mexico’s new cannabis industry opens, it plans to take control.

How did Mexico become legal?

Mexico did not establish its new cannabis legality like the other legalized countries. Rather than it pass by way of a bill that makes its way through government, Mexico’s cannabis legalization came through its court system. Due to jurisprudencia in Mexico, if five supreme court rulings are made on a specific topic, that are all the same, and consecutive, the ruling becomes binding for all lower courts. If a court can only rule a certain way, it becomes a legally binding measure. In this case, since the current legislation of the country does not match these supreme court rulings, the legislative arm stands in contradiction to the judiciary arm, requiring an update in laws.

Until this happens, Mexico is left in a strange position. Written laws tell police officers they can bust a person with over five grams of marijuana, but judicially, so long as the cannabis was for personal use, and doesn’t go over about an ounce, the courts cannot find the person guilty of a crime. In fact, they likely won’t even hear the case if it’s a clear-cut personal possession or personal use case. Does this go for all cannabis crimes in Mexico? Certainly not. The old rules still apply both legislatively and judicially. If you’re caught selling marijuana, growing it commercially, or trafficking it around the country or across borders, you don’t get out of a punishment, which could be anywhere from 10-25 years in prison.

Mexico and cannabis

In Mexico, due to a 2009 decriminalization measure, amounts of up to five grams of cannabis are allowed, with more than that capable of incurring prison time. Cannabis cultivation is actually the direct subject of the string of court cases that pushed through this legalization. Updates to the Federal Criminal Code have already decriminalized personal cultivation for first time offenders. Other circumstances can incur prison time, since commercial growing is still illegal.

Why hasn’t it happened yet?

The supreme court rulings that established jurisprudencia happened between 2015-2018. The original date for the legislative branch of government to update its laws to be in concert with the court system, was the end of 2019. When this date approached and the laws were not passed, the date was pushed to April 30th of 2020. Due to other issues, perhaps coronavirus related (perhaps not), the date was once again pushed to December 15th 2020. Once again, the Mexican government could not get its stuff together, and it was pushed off yet again until April 30th, 2021.

Of course, since there doesn’t seem to be a measure set that mandates the government to finish by this new date, we have no way of knowing if the government will push it off once again. With mounting pressure from within to solve this legal gray area issue that was created, along with the rest of the world watching Mexico expectantly, it seems there’s added stress put on Mexico to just get it done.

When the government pushed it off this last time, the complaint was about the complexity of the issue, and the need for more time. Of course, with so many places globally that have already set up regulation systems for recreational marijuana, it sounds silly that Mexico can’t seem to figure it out. It’s like the US having the rest of the world to look at for healthcare models, and then complaining about not knowing how to put together a working healthcare system. In both instances, enough information exists on how to do it, and how to deal with different and opposing needs. The better question becomes, is there another reason that this isn’t being done timely or correctly?

The Mexican cartel violence issue

To say that Mexico has issues with cartels and drug violence is the understatement of the year. This implies two things though, one which is often overlooked. The first is the violence itself and the damage to society. The second – while it’s never actually said this way – might be the more important factor to governments, and that’s the lost revenue for governments because of illegal black-market operations being carried out by these cartels. Which really holds more water in the end? Your guess is as good as mine. But let’s take a look at both factors.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, Mexico has more than 200 drug trafficking cells, which have caused approximately 150,000 deaths since 2006, and are responsible for 150+ deaths of candidates and politicians just leading up to the 2018 election. That last piece of information should be remembered when considering what could be holding up the politicians passing the legislation meant to cut cartels out. In 2018 alone there was a 15% increase in cartel-related homicides, with a whopping 33,341 murders that year. This increased even more to 34,500 homicides in Mexico in 2019 – though this might not all be attributable to cartels. This number stayed about consistent with approximately 34,523 murders in 2020.

legal marijuana

This cartel issue stems from the 1980’s when Mexico’s criminals instituted a certain amount of organization between them as a way to split regions, trafficking routes, and to establish new businesses. This wasn’t a smooth operation, and competition between the organizations led to fighting over territories and operations. This was compounded by Mexico in 2006, when the government actively got involved, bringing in the military to combat the cartel violence at the behest of then president Felipe Calderon, and with US backing from the Bush administration.

This strategy was reformed by President Enrique Peña Nieto in 2012, who attempted to move away from more violent measures, instituting policies more directly related to improving public safety and law enforcement reform. This helped for a bit, but went down the drain when a power struggle erupted in one of the biggest cartels – Sinaloa – due to a void left by the final arrest and extradition of the cartel’s leader Joaquin Guzman (aka El Chapo) in 2017. It was around this time that murder rates started increasing to the more recent numbers mentioned previously.

And the money?

Remember that second reason I gave for why governments aren’t so into cartels? They lose a lot of money to them. Period. Like any illegal industry, getting hard numbers is difficult, but there are plenty of estimates for how much money drug cartels bring in – and away from standard markets. There is no standard way to make these estimations, but many studies assess things like drug consumption and the street value of drugs. These numbers (much like murder statistics which vary by publication), are all over the board, ranging from as low as $3.9 billion to as high as $29 billion.

In a report by the UN in 2011, it was estimated that at that time criminal organization revenue globally accounted for an entire 1.5% of the global GDP, which was equivalent to $870 billion in 2009. In a 2017 study conducted by the Global Financial Integrity, a think tank out of Washington, DC, which studies illicit money flows, the approximated retail value of drug-trafficking crimes transnationally was between $426-$652 billion globally.

When it comes to Mexico specifically, according to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the 2006 estimate for cartel income derived from drug trafficking was $13.8 billion from sales to the US alone, with $8.5 billion of that specifically related to the marijuana trade. A 2007 report from the Government Accountability Office put the number at $3.9-$14.3 billion in 2005 for just the marijuana trade, with an average of $15.5 billion for all drug trafficking in Mexico, if taking the midpoint of the range for each drug category.

The Department of Homeland Security in 2010 put the number between $19-$29 billion a year. In a 2011 report, the U.N. Office of Drugs and Crime put the number at $11 billion annually. A Reuters report from 2018 stated cartel revenue is approximately $21 billion per year. Another 2018 report by the Congressional Research Service put the number between $5-$7.5 billion, and a Rand study from 2010 set the range at $6-$8 billion.

legal cannabis industry

It should be remembered that these numbers come from different years, sometimes come from offices or organizations that can benefit from having specifically higher or lower numbers, are not calculated by any standardized measures, and unless noted, apply to all drug trafficking, not just cannabis-related. The one thing outstanding about all these numbers is that they’re very high. No matter which report is closest to fact, the one thing we know is that a lot of money is being made by Mexican cartels.

Will the Sinaloa cartel run Mexico’s new cannabis industry?

It’s hard to know exactly what will happen when transferring an all-illegal black-market industry into an above-board legal industry. Logically, anyone making money off such a black-market industry is probably going to try to find above board ways of keeping that income, should it become untenable to maintain the old system.

Since the 1980’s, one of the biggest and most powerful cartels in Mexico is the Sinaloa cartel. Recent publications have fingered cartel operatives as explaining how the Sinaloa cartel is planning on taking over Mexico’s new cannabis industry by importing stronger strains of cannabis, and finding ways to infiltrate into the legal market.

This really shouldn’t come as a surprise though. If proponents of drug reform actually thought that something like marijuana could be made legal in a place like Mexico, without those who are already cultivating it and selling it finding a way to keep their business, then it doesn’t say much for the intelligence or critical thinking abilities of those in office.

Did someone from the Sinaloa cartel really make these statements? Maybe. Maybe not. Does it matter? No! Because this was always what was going to happen, and once again, anyone surprised by the idea of it, hasn’t been paying attention to history, or reality. In fact, the better question – and concern – is, how bad will these cartels be fighting it out to control this industry? It could very well be that not only will this new legislation not take money away from cartels or curb cartel violence, but that it might increase both earnings for the cartels, and the violence between them. Essentially, this legislation is like a major land grab, and right now, a lot of criminal organizations that have already been working in this vein, are going to want it.

So, will the Sinaloa cartel take over Mexico’s upcoming cannabis industry? Maybe. Maybe not. But the one more sure fact of this matter, is that the cannabis industry, will undoubtedly (I know that’s a big statement…) be run by cartels. Technically this is just my opinion, but very little indicates it would go any other way.

Conclusion

Personally, I expect that one of the biggest issues with Mexico passing this cannabis legislation is the large number of politicians who have been taken out for not acting according to cartel desires. I certainly wouldn’t want to vote for something that might very realistically get me shot in the head. Unfortunately for Mexican politicians, this is the situation at hand. Perhaps the best thing they can do, is not try to stop what is already slated to happen, however weird that may sound to some. After all, it’s not like their measures ever worked in the past.

The Sinaloa cartel will most definitely be trying to take over Mexico’s new cannabis industry, but let’s be honest, so will every operating cartel in Mexico. When the legislation passes, it might be best we all stay inside for awhile.
