From the Archives: A Christmas Story (2000)

At the finale of the Christmas show last year in Eugene, OR, I came out as a skid-row Santa, complete with rubber nose, plastic sack full of beer cans, and a pint of peppermint schnapps to fortify the holiday spirit. I also borrowed my wife Faye’s blue egg bucket and labeled it: “Homeless.” I’d jangle the cans like a bagful of aluminum sleigh bells while I worked the mainfloor aisle seats: “Hey, come on, buddy. Put something in the bucket, for Chrissakes. Don’t you know it’s Christmastime? Hey, that’s better. God bless you. You’re beautiful.”

I ended up with only about seventy-five bucks. Not much of a take for a full house at a Christmas show. But even seventy-five bucks was a wad too big to pocket. So after I got out of my red suit and rubber snoot I drove off to seek a worthy recipient. I spotted a likely assortment of candidates in the 7-Eleven parking lot, on the corner of Sixth and Blair. I swung in and held the bucket out the window.

“All right. Who’s the hardest-luck case in this lot?”

The candidates looked me over and edged away—all but one guy, pony-tailed and slope-shouldered, his chin tucked down in the collar of a canvas camouflage jacket. “I got a streak of hard luck runs all the way back to New Jersey,” he said. “What about it?”

“I’m on a mission from St. Nicholas,” I told him. “And if you are, in fact, the least fortunate of the lot”—in the spirit of the season, I refrained from saying “biggest loser”—”then this could be your lucky night.”

“Right,” he said. “You’re some kind of Holy Roller? Where’s the string? What’s the hustle?”

“No string, no catch, no hustle. I’m giving. You’re getting. Get it?”

He did. He took the money and ran, taking Faye’s egg bucket into the bargain. The last I saw of him, he was scurrying away, looking for a hole.

Since then, I’ve wondered about him. Did that little windfall make a difference? Did he rent a cheap room? Get a bath? A companion? Every time I found myself passing through one of Eugene’s hard-luck harbors, I kept half an eye peeled for the sight of a long tail of black hair draggling down the back of a camouflage jacket. Last week, a year later to the day, I made a sighting.

I was in town with Faye and our daughter, getting in some Christmas shopping before we rendezvoused with my mom for supper. We’d done a couple of hours in the malls, and I was shopped out. I announced that I wanted to make some private purchases, and slipped off into the rainy cold—alone. I was headed for the liquor store on Eighth, thinking the spirit could use a little fortification. But the trusty peppermint wasn’t powerful enough. These hometown streets are just too strange, too vacant, too sad. Corner of Sixth at Olive: empty. The great Dangold Creamery that my dad built up from a little Eugene farmer’s cooperative: bulldozed down. I ducked my head and kept walking in the rain.

The street in my memory was the clearer path anyway: John Warren’s Hardware over there, where you could buy blasting powder across the counter; the Corral Novelty Shop, where you could buy itching powder; the Heilig Theater, with its all-the-way-across-the-street arch, flashing what we all took to be the Norwegian word for “hello,” so big it could be read all the way from the windows of the arriving trains: “Heilig, Heilig, Heilig.” All gone.

When I reached the city center, I noticed that the thing people had finally given up trying to call a fountain was newly disguised with pine boughs and potted plants. But to no avail. It still looked like the remnants of a bombed-out French cathedral. Then, when the rain eased up, I was surprised to discover that the ruins were not quite deserted: I saw a loose black braid hanging down the back of a camouflage jacket. That seemed right. He was in the old fountain’s basin, bent in a concealing crouch at one of the potted pines.

I came up from behind and clapped my hand on his shoulder. “Whatcha doin’, Hard Luck? Counting another bucket of money?”

He wheeled around and had my wrist clamped in a bone-breaking grasp before I could finish the word. I saw then that this wasn’t a chinless street rat standing down in the basin after all. This was a block-jawed American Indian built like two fireplugs, sitting in a wheelchair.

“Ouch! Man! Let go! I thought you were somebody else!”

He eased the hold, but kept the wrist. I told him about last year’s longhair and the matching jacket.

He listened, studying my eyes. “OK. Sorry about the twist. I was taking a leak. You surprised me. Let’s get out of the rain and see what kind of medicine you’ve got sticking out of your pocket.”

We retired under some scaffolding. He was less than enthusiastic about my choice of pocket medicine. “I’d rather drink something like Southern Comfort if I have to choose a sugar drink,” he said. But we passed the pint back and forth and watched the rain.

He leaned to spit and a folded Army blanket slipped out of his lap. His legs were as gone as the main gut of my poor hometown.

He was a part-time fillet man from the Pike Place Market, up in Seattle, on his way to spend Christmas with family on “the rez,” outside of Albuquerque. His bus was laid up for a couple of hours: “I think they’re getting the Greyhound spayed before she gets to California.”

When the pint was about three-quarters gone, I screwed on the lid and held it out. “I gotta meet the women. Go ahead and keep it.”

“Ah, I guess not,” he said.

“You’re pretty choosy for a thirsty man, aren’t you? What would be your best druthers?”

“To have the money and make my own choice.”

I reached for my wallet. “I think I got a couple of bucks.”

“And a quarter? If I had two bucks and a quarter, I could get a pint of Ten High. With four and change I’d go on to a fair-to-middlin’ fifth. Cream of Kentucky.”

I hesitated. Was I being hustled? “OK, Let’s see what we’ve got.” I emptied the wallet and pockets onto his blanket. He added a few coins and counted the collection.

“Nine seventy-five. If I come up with another two dollars, I can get a bottle of Bushmill’s Irish. Think I can panhandle two dollars between here and the liquor store?”

“Without a doubt,” I assured him. “With both panhandles tied behind your back.”

We shook hands goodbye and headed off in our separate directions, strolling and rolling through the rain. At the restaurant, my mother wanted to know what I was thinking about that gave me such a goofy grin.

“I was just thinking, if beggars can’t be choosers, then it must follow that choosers, by definition, are not beggars.”

This year for the Christmas show, Santa’s got himself a classier outfit and wrangled some holiday helpers out of the high-school choir. God bless ’em. And we’re gonna work all the aisles. Come on out here you helpers, come on out. Get down there and panhandle! And you guys in the audience start passing your money to the aisles here. This is no time to nickel-and-dime, for Chrissakes! It’s Christmastime.

Homemade Gifts Using Everclear

You just can’t beat homemade gifts. The time, effort and energy that goes into the process makes them so special. Does your bestie love luxurious body scrubs? Make one! Does grandma love marmalade? Whip up a fresh batch for her morning toast. In addition to being a considerate way to show your loved ones how much they mean to you over the holiday season, homemade presents are also a terrific option if you’re on a tight budget.

Here are two DIY gift ideas using Everclear Grain Alcohol that will give you some Yuletide inspiration. So hit your bong and get crafty.

Fabulous Fragrance

Dank weed is delicious and certainly has its upsides. But the lingering smell it can have on clothes, furniture and the air isn’t one of them. If you have a friend who’s always trying to eliminate the smell of smoke from their life (or maybe you want to give them a hint!), try making them this homemade fragrance. Peppermint, lemongrass and lavender essential oils are all great options for getting rid of the smell of cannabis.

Stephanie Gerber from Hello Glow, a beauty and lifestyle website focused on DIY and natural ingredients, loves making homemade gifts because she believes they feel so much more personal.

“You can really customize your gifts,” Gerber says. “I like to take someone’s hobbies or favorite things and use those ideas to create something fun like a body scrub or bath bomb. And let’s be honest, you can save so much money with homemade beauty!”

Homemade perfume is a great way to create uniquely personal fragrances. All it takes is distilled water, your favorite essential oils and Everclear to make DIY perfumes. The versatility of Everclear, Gerber explains, means it can be the base ingredient for so many things, “from personalized perfume to super flaky shortbread cookies. And you can basically clean your whole house with it!”

Because alcohol evaporates quickly and aids in lifting and diffusing a perfume’s aroma, it’s frequently used as a fixative in commercial perfumes. Gerber uses Everclear as the alcohol base for her DIY perfume formulas.

“As a grain alcohol product with a high proof, Everclear makes a fantastic base for spray perfumes—not only because it’s readily available, but also because it helps essential oils bind to the water used in these recipes,” Gerber explains. “Alcohols like Everclear also act as a preservative, ensuring your perfume has a strong scent projection and lasts for months to come.”

Ingredients

1 cup filtered or distilled water
2 tablespoons Everclear® Grain Alcohol
Essential oil blends
Glass perfume bottles or spray bottles
Funnel (optional)

Step 1 – Combine Everclear + Essential Oils

To make any of these DIY essential oil perfumes, start by pouring the Everclear into a glass jar or spray bottle. Then add the essential oils according to the mix you’ve chosen.
Feel free to scale the recipe up or down, depending on your bottle size. Let the mixture sit for five to 10 minutes for the oils to dilute.

Step 2 – Add Water

Close the bottle and shake well to combine. Allow the perfume to sit for 24 to 48 hours to let the scent develop fully.
Be sure to shake the bottle before each use and apply it to pulse points (like the insides of your wrists or behind your ears) to further activate the scent with your body heat. Use your perfume within three to four months.

Boozy Brownies

The holidays are basically a free-for-all for eating sweet treats. There’s nothing like a box of freshly made cookies or bars to brighten someone’s day. If you have a friend who’s partial to a sweet treat after a session, these mouthwatering brownies will earn you some real brownie points.

Laura McIntosh, who’s won a James Beard Foundation Award and is the Emmy-nominated host of Bringing It Home, a “farm-to-table” travelogue series, has created this recipe for gooey, chocolatey and all-around delicious Boozy Brownies.

McIntosh loves making homemade gifts because they are fun to create. “You can personalize each gift and add a special/personal touch,” she says. “Homemade gifts speak to each person individually, showing your love and connection.

Ingredients

½ cup or 3 oz. dark chocolate (60% Bittersweet Guitard Is preferred)
¾ cup granulated sugar
½ cup unsalted butter (plus extra to grease the pan)
¼ cup Everclear
2 large eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

Melt butter and chocolate in a double boiler. For microwave: Melt for 25 seconds, whisk and repeat until mixture is melted, smooth and combined.
Add sugar to the mixture and whisk well.
Add Everclear and mix until blended, checking to ensure the mixture is cooled.
Add eggs to the cooled mixture (heat will cook eggs).
Add flour and mix well. Mixture consistency should be uniform.
Transfer batter to greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes, or until an inserted fork comes out mostly clean.
Cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes.
Cut into bars.

Pro tip: Add ½ cup of chocolate chips to the batter for extra gooeyness.

Santa Claus Roots

Holiday marketing gimmicks are nothing new, especially in the cannabis industry. High Times Magazine has explored the topic in detail—usually when someone dressed as Santa gets into trouble. In North Pole, Alaska, voters in 2015 rejected a measure that would have banned dispensaries in the town.

There may even be a psychedelic connection between the Santa Claus origin story and psychedelics. In the December, 1979 issue of High Times Magazine, the late counterculture correspondent for the publication Glenn O’Brien examined the connections between Santa Claus and a specific kind of psychedelic mushroom: fly agaric, aka the toadstool that conquered the universe. In fact, O’Brien argues, the mere existence of Santa could be related to a shaman in Lapland who ate Amanita muscaria.

At 10 on our list, we start with the most modern. Right off the bat, The Night Before is probably the only film on here that may have been written whilst high on cannabis. The Night Before is Seth Rogen and the gang’s attempt at a festive film hits some of the marks. It’s the night before Christmas and a group of friends head to a big old Christmas rave as Joseph Gordon Levit’s character has no family to spend the night with. Hilarity ensues as things get more and more ridiculous. Lots of Cannabis is smoked and the whole film feels like a more adult attempt at a Christmas movie. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but if you want something to just chill out to and laugh at, Rogen has you covered… plus it’s free on Amazon prime so there’s that.

9. The Santa Clause

1994’s The Santa Clause may seem an odd choice to get high to, but trust me when you see chimney scenes as well as the journey to the North pole, you’ll understand why. Tim Allen stars as Scatt Calvin (SC, get it?) a man who accidentally causes the death of Santa Claus. After putting on his jacket he himself signs a cleverly titled Santa Clause which means he must now become Santa. Another genuinely funny Christmas film, full of some great performances from an ensemble cast. This film also happens to have my favourite representations of reindeer in the sarcastic, flatulent animatronics. David Krumholtz as Bernard the Elf is another highlight.

8. A Christmas Carol, Robert Zemeckis Version

The bell strikes midnight as we have our first adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on this list, from the mind of Robert Zemeckis. Known as well for the equally festive Polar Express, Zemeckis makes Dickens’ classic a whole lot darker than other versions (I’m looking at you Muppets). He adds back from the original novel, the personified versions of ignorance and want in a very surreal scene. We also have an exceptionally trippy moment when Scrooge is thrown into the future and sees his own funeral preparations. This adaptation might not be to everyone’s taste and the animation falls into the uncanny valley at some points, but it is still a romp and Carey’s performances alone as Scrooge and all three ghosts, make this a must see stoned Christmas film.

7. Chicken Run

Perhaps a new name to readers from the States, or anywhere outside of the UK. Chicken Run is one of Aardman Studios’ (of Wallace and Gromit fame) first feature length animated films. It features a set of clay-mation chickens fighting for their lives in a WW2 inspired chicken farm/prisoner of war camp all in the style of The Great Escape. Full of dry British humour, as well as a star turn from Mel Gibson, playing a cocky American rooster who promises to teach the Chickens to fly, this film is shown every year around the Holiday season on British TV. This of course being in itself exceptionally British, for what sounds more christmassy than a film about Chickens trying to escape a farm? I’ve put this on my list of Christmas films to get high to as it really is very funny and can only be heightened by enjoying it whilst high.

6. Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton’s festive Magnus Opus. A darkly comic telling of an original tale about how Jack Skellington, the reigning king of Halloween town accidentally finds the neighbouring Christmas town. Chaos ensues as Skellington goes a bit Christmas mad, trying to take over the holiday and run it himself. Superbly animated, with that idiosyncratic Burton flare, this film is as haunting as it is festive, some of the characters are actually quite scary (Oogie Boogie, the boogeyman still freaks me out). The bright colours and intricate set designs will make you cannabis Christmas party all the more interesting as there really is a lot to look at with this film. Rated 95% fresh on rotten tomatoes, it is a hit that everyone will enjoy.

5. Love Actually

Now for something a little more romantic. There are literally thousands of romantic Christmas movies out there, but I felt that Love Actually was the only one that firmly deserved a spot on my list. This best of British classic features so many iconic actors, moments and jokes that it would be impossible to leave out. Who doesn’t well up at the ending when the boy runs through the airport? Who doesn’t smile when Hugh Grant does his dance routine to ‘Jump’. It’s a classic through and through and something to get you especially warm and tingly as the cannabis kicks in.

4. Elf

Will Ferrell outdoes hims-elf (ho ho ho) in this Christmas cracker of a film. One of the most laugh out loud funny movies that is genuinely heartwarming as well. In this John Favreau classic, a human sneaks into Santa’s sack and is raised by elves in the north pole. Very quickly Buddy out grows his peers and it becomes clear that he doesn’t quite fit in. We follow his adventures as he returns to New York City to find his father and to fit in at last. With excellent performances from Zooey Deschanel, Will Ferrell and James Caan, as well as a 85% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes, there’s a reason Elf is at the top of my list. It’s the perfect film to get a little giggly at due to it’s pretty zany sense of humour (I’m talking about the raccoon clawing Buddy’s face). If you haven’t seen this christmas romp already, thank me in the New Year. Available on Amazon, but sadly not prime however it’s only a few dollars and very much worth it.

3. Home Alone

Of course it had to be Kevin McCallister and his big night in. We’ve all seen it and I reckon it’s about time to watch it again, as this is one of the all time feel good films for the christmas season. If MaCaulay Caulkin in his heyday, fighting off home invaders with an incredibly inventive set of weapons, then you need to recharge your christmas spirit. Everyone as a child had a dream of setting up their own intricate booby systems as much as everyone secretly dreamed they’d be left behind from a family vacation to have the whole house to themselves. So spark up, grab some snacks and shout your ‘Kevinnnn!!!’s for all to hear.

2. The Muppet Christmas Carol

Where would a list Christmas films be without arguably one of the best muppet films ever made. This film is so canonically christmassy that I refuse to feel festive without first seeing Kermit and co. tackle Dickens’ classic tale. Not only is the film well made, but exceptionally well cast with each muppet being a perfect fit for the role they were given. Kermit’s cratchit is perfect and Gonzo and Rizzo as a double act narrating team tie together this well loved adaptation. This was one of the first muppet films to be made after Jim Henson’s death and they more than do him proud. It also would be impossible not to mention Michael Caine’s powerhouse performance. In a role that he could have coasted and taken the pay-check he delivers a touching journey from Mean old Mr Humbug all the way to the changed Scrooge at the end. Light up and prepare to sing along to this Christmas classic. One thing to watch out for is that some of the muppets are already a little trippy in their designs, so could be a little overwhelming if you’re too high.

1. It’s a Wonderful Life

Get the tears ready as we end on the emotional powerhouse that is ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. The oldest of all the Christmas films on our list, being made in 1946, It’s a Wonderful Life is the story of a down on his luck man, George Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart, who asks the question ‘What if I’d never been born?’. An angel shows him how the world would be without him and he sees the errors of asking such a question. Powerful, moving and classic, if you want a film to watch that’ll really make you love and respect those around you then look no further, this will leave you warmed to the core.

If You Want to Smoke (Christmas) Trees, Ask Santa for These Strains

The holidays feel like a time of year tailor made for creating wonderful sensory memories.
