The Reigning King of Cannabis

The world of modern cannabis genetics can tend to feel like it’s dedicated to the hype of the moment, but Green House Seed Company founder Arjan Roskam taps into cannabis genetics at the source.

Be it the hills of South America or the rivers of Africa, Roskam has spent much of his life hunting the best genetics in the world since he opened his first Amsterdam, Netherlands coffeeshop in 1992. This would lead to the breeding work that ended up taking home a ton of trophies.

Roskam first found his way onto the Cannabis Cup podium in 1993, placing second with Silver Pearl and then again placing second for Citral Skunk in 1994. But 1995 would be the year he found his way to the podium with White Widow, kicking off the legend of a strain that carries weight to this day, even if we never see it anymore.

After another runner-up finish in 1997, the era of Super Silver Haze would kick off with its 1998 victory. The next year, in 1999, it would be the first strain to win back-to-back Cannabis Cups. Things went well the next few years, with another win in 2003 for Hawaiian Snow and Arjan’s Ultra Haze climbing to the top in second place in 2005 before winning in 2006.

Green House Seed Company’s Super Lemon Haze went on to back-to-back Cannabis Cup wins in 2008 and 2009. It was arguably the strain Americans were the most exposed to from Green House through the 2010s, as there were some exceptional phenotypes going around Northern California. The Village, half of Symbiotic Genetics, placed third in the first legal Cannabis Cup in California with Super Lemon Haze in May 2018. Most of the Cannabis Cup podiums would see Green House on them somewhere until Dutch officials started to crack down on the competition and Europe’s weed enthusiasm began to move toward Barcelona, Spain, or even Germany, where they are now legally importing medical cannabis from Canada. While Amsterdam is the legendary homeland of cannabis genetics, its glory is a bit more diluted now than in years past.

Thankfully for Amsterdam, Roskam—known as the “king of cannabis”—spent the majority of his life helping build up local lore since he opened his first coffeeshop at age 21. But the world closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, just one month before his 50th birthday, would throw a wrench in his adventures.

However, when we met with Roskam at Hall of Flowers in Palm Springs, California, the world was feeling more open than ever—and Roskam was taking full advantage of that fact as he bounced around the globe in the months leading up to the California event.

“We are super, super busy. We just made a new movie in Africa,” Roskam told High Times.

As a part of the Strain Hunters cannabis documentary series, Roskam and his team traveled roughly 100 miles by boat on an African river over seven days last summer.

“The last six weeks, I’ve been doing shows in Barcelona, then we did Cape Town, then we did Rome, and we did Bologna, then we went to the 420 Golden Cup in Colombia in Santa Marta.”

We asked Roskam if the pandemic afforded him time to go back into his genetics collection and search for new winners and breeding stock. He explained his team was still able to “hunt 100,000 seeds at a time” at their operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also said there was plenty of work to be done at home too, and the pandemic was the perfect chance to reimagine Green House coffeeshops.

“The moment COVID hit Holland, I’m talking about March or February 2020, we all sat in the office and couldn’t go nowhere. We knew this [pandemic] was gonna take one to two years,” Roskam said. “We did a remodel of our coffeeshops. We have five in Amsterdam, we had four and we bought another one. So we decided to remodel all the Green House coffeeshops. We took six weeks for each coffeeshop, and they look amazing now.”

With no coffeeshops to run, the coffeeshop staff wanted to help with the rebuild. The bouncer became one of the painters. One of the guys had some plastering experience. They worked 10-hour days going from shop to shop. Much of the time, it was a full rebuild, even including new walls to go with the updated floors, lights, and marble.

GREEN HOUSE X COMPOUND GENETICS

We held our interview with Roskam in the Compound Genetics booth at Hall of Flowers while he and Green House CEO Joa Helms met with American fans. Roskam explained that Green House has some future plans lined up with Compound Genetics.

“We’re going to use some of our genetics with their genetics,” Roskam said. “So we’re looking at crossing the famous Exodus Cheese and some other things that we can’t speak about right now.”

Christopher Lynch, founder of Compound Genetics, told High Times he is excited to work with Roskam.

“Our connection with Arjan is in a league of its own,” Lynch said. “His knowledge of cannabis, worldwide experiences with the plant, and professional demeanor is truly impressive. I’m beyond excited for the Green House Seed Co. x Compound Genetics collaboration.”

HYPE VS. HERITAGE

Lynch and his company have played a big role in determining the exciting weed trends in recent years. We asked Roskam how Holland responded to the wave of dessert weed that first started coming out of Northern California just over a decade ago as Cookies started to take off.

“It’s still only 15% of everything [in Holland],” Roskam said. “Because people cannot pay it. And 15% can pay the prices of $18 to $30 for a gram. So most of the people buy the normal stuff. And in Europe, it’s kind of a shame, because the American imports are just much more expensive. Of course, that will change in the future.”

Roskam has had plenty of his own “hype” strains over the years. Two new flavors he hopes his fans will add to the list are Fullgas and Lemon Orange. On top of the 12 strains he’d already launched in 2022 by the time we chatted, he also had three new Banana strains that would be dropping in the weeks to follow.

Roskam noted that before the last four years that he has spent bouncing around Canada and Africa, he’s spent another eight in the bush. Now he’s taking a little bit of a pause to focus on everything he’s collected over the years.

“We’re going full gas on new genetics,” Roskam said of their efforts. “There are four places in the world where we work besides the Congo. We work in Columbia, Denmark, Spain, and America. So we have a lot of opportunities to make new genetics, and we think Green House Seed Company, with all our knowledge and experience and guys around us, we can be very soon [a] leader again in the seed market, you know?”

We asked if it ever felt like there were just more places for people to spend their money over the last decade, as opposed to Green House falling off the mountaintop.

“Sure, which is great for the industry no?” Roskam replied. “More people makes everyone more happy because there are more varieties.”

As for hype surrounding strains, we asked Roskam if he has ever had concerns about everyone growing the same types of cannabis because of their popularity, which in turn narrows down the flavors available in the marketplace. He laughed and saw the premise as a very American problem. Roskam believes that there are a lot of great strains in America, but said in the rest of the world, there are even greater strains.

He said most American genetics come from four breeding lines.

“There’s a lot of Kush. There’s a lot of this. There’s a lot of that. Listen, they’re great strains. I still consider Hawaiian Snow the best strain in the world.”

As he spent the nights in Palm Springs socializing with some of the most influential people in cannabis, many of them agreed with his opinion of the Hawaiian Snow or at least agreed that it is a contender in the conversation.

“If you and your wife go out to the restaurant with friends, you get all the food and you put it out in the middle of the table. Why would you narrow yourself down to one variety? Do you eat the same food every day? Do you drink the same wine? Some people do, but these are not people that enjoy life,” Roskam stressed.

GREEN HOUSE’S GENETIC LIBRARY

The conversation then moved to how many genetic lines Green House is able to work on at once. Given Green House’s multi-decade success, Roskam said it’s a lot. He argues that thanks to a trick developed in-house over the years, he’s able to understand a lot about a plant’s expression over the course of two months. He boasts that he can even pick up on traits passed down from parents and grandparents.

“We like to come with new things, strange tastes, and bring new genetics to the world,” Roskam said.

One of the funniest things about American breeding for the Green House team is how many people have used Super Lemon Haze over the years in their own work. He notes that some breeders are openly selling it now, which they really appreciate. Roskam wouldn’t mention any names but shared that they’re using Green House genetics, and he plans to use their genetics in the future.

“And this is great. Why not, you know?” Roskam said. “The Lemon Orange, we used a seed from Crockett [Family Farms] with my Super Lemon in it,” Roskam said. “Cloud Walker, we used our Punta Roja, which we scouted in our movie with Mendobreath. So yeah, we are mixing these days, but we are putting the pure genes in to make sure it’s strong. I think that’s really important.”

He argued that you’re less likely to see the plants impacted by diseases with sturdier genetics. He also contends you see less powdery mildew when the plants are properly cared for.

When asked what kind of technology has made his life the easiest over the last decade, he shook his head, noting that it wasn’t really a technology issue once you got down to what works.

“Listen, from the bottom of my heart, you can only do a really great job with huge fields,” he replied. “Nobody has that in America because everybody has an investor, and the investor wants to see his return by profiting on every square foot.”

Roskam, on the other hand, is in a very different situation. Green House’s Africa setup allows them to pop 20,000 to 40,000 seeds at a time on the quest for true genetic outliers.

“We have 40 glasshouses across seven valleys,” Roskam said. “And in those seven valleys, we flower out our phenos that we hunt. That creates the possibilities we have that nobody else does.

In agriculture purposes, it’s scientifically known that you need 10,000 plants to find one. Nobody can do that in America. That’s why there’s a lot of public companies. That’s the difference between Green House Seed Company and others.”

As for how stable American seed companies are compared to their European peers, it depends on how you look at it. Roskam said, of course, some Dutch lines are very strong after 30 years of work.

“And don’t forget we are Dutch farmers. Seventy percent of all the world’s agricultural seeds come from Holland,” Roskam said. “The whole glasshouse industry comes from Holland. We are farmers. We are simple farmers. But we are very good farmers.”

He conceded there are many more possibilities in America because cannabis is legal in many states.

“But still here in Holland, even though we are totally illegal, we have big places in Africa and Morocco where you are able to do a very, very great job,” he said.

Just Announced – High Times Cannabis Cup Illinois: People’s Choice 2022

High Times is heading back to the Land of Lincoln!

In the High Times Cannabis Cup Illinois: People’s Choice 2022, the largest pool of judges in history will help determine who has the best cannabis product in the stomping grounds of Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, and Oprah Winfrey.

It is only the third competition ever that will be open to the Illinois public.

Here’s the gist. From July 11-13, competitors will be able to submit their products at designated partnering cannabis retailers in Illinois. Then, a couple weeks later, on July 24, those interested in serving as judges for the competition can get their hands on a judge kit. The kits will be sold on a first-come-first serve basis, and will include up to 35 different cannabis products. They cost between $100 and $300. Want to be notified about judge updates? Sign up at CannabisCup.com/preregister.

Judges will have until September 4 to submit their choices. On September 18, winners will be announced.

As for competitors, one entry will cost you $500, and two will be $250 each. For three entries or more, however, the fee will be waived.

A recreational and medical cannabis competition, the High Times Cannabis Cup Illinois: People’s Choice 2022 will feature a dozen different categories: Indica Flower (maximum three entries per company); Sativa Flower (three per company); Hybrid Flower (three per company); Pre-Rolls (two per company); Concentrates (one per company); Vape Pens & Cartridges (one per company); Edibles: Gummies (one per company); Edibles: Non-Gummies (one per company); Edibles: Beverages (one per company); Medical Flower; (two per company); Medical Vape Pens (one per company); and Medical Edibles (one per company).

For flower entries, units must be one gram; the organizers will not accept any 3.5 gram units. Pre-roll and infused pre-roll entries will be capped at two-gram flower equivalency each, while concentrates and vape pens must be half-gram units (batteries required for cartridges). Edible units must have a maximum of 50mg of THC.

The competition is a win-win for both consumers and producers––the former gets to sample a wide variety of product and the latter can get their goods in front of hundreds of new customers, while receiving valuable feedback, as well.

But that isn’t all they might get. Winners will be taking home some hardware, and more.

First place recipients will receive the gleaming High Times Cannabis Cup trophy, which was designed by Alex and Allyson Grey. Made of highly durable zinc and 24k gold plating, the trophy comes delivered in a gold box replete with a cleaning wipe to make sure it sparkles in front of all your customers and friends.

In addition, first place winners will get a full page advertisement in High Times magazine following the competition, along with other forms of promotion through the publication’s website and social media properties. They will also receive a detailed report of the judge scores and comments for their products.

Second place winners will receive a medal made of pewter with silver plating and a silver ribbon that will be inscribed with the winning category, along with a detailed report of the judges scores and comments. They will also receive a half-page advertisement in High Times magazine.

Third place recipients will get a medal made of pewter with bronze plating and a bronze ribbon inscribed with the winning category, along with a half-page advertisement in the magazine and a judges report.

Top three finishers will also receive artwork assets denoting their finish in the competition to place on their packaging and other materials.

Just Announced – High Times Cannabis Cup Colorado: People’s Choice 2022

The High Times Cannabis Cup Colorado: People’s Choice 2022 will be a massive competition that will celebrate cannabis in the Rocky Mountain state.

Colorado is one of the pioneers of the cannabis industry, bringing legal medical cannabis to the State as early as 2000,” said Mark Kazinec, High Times Director, Competitions & Events. “Once it went recreational in 2012, High Times hosted the first-ever Cannabis Cup in Colorado in 2013, and it was a huge hit. People still talk about it today.

“We launched the first People’s Choice Cup in Colorado in 2020, and we’re thrilled to return in 2022 to see how Colorado has stepped up their game in the past two years.”

High Times hand-selects retail partners in Colorado, like Rocky Mountain High, to give them exclusive access to the Judge Kits.

“With a limited number of kits in each State, people line up outside of our partner shops to be the first ones to get their hands on these products,” saidKazinec. “When you’re a loyal customer to one of our retailer partners, you deserve early access. We deliver just that, and we expect these loyalty members to put their hearts and souls into judging the kits, just as the competitors did when creating these products for the competition.”

The People Have Chosen

The Cannabis Cup People’s Choice was born in 2020 and hasn’t taken a break on awarding the best cannabis around the country in 2021 and beyond. Despite the chaotic times we’ve all been having, we knew that cannabis cultivators were still pumping out award-winning products and that people around the country wanted to find the best weed. The People’s Choice concept opened up the Cannabis Cups to anyone who wanted to be a judge. Now with up to 228 Judge Kits per category, Judge Kits are no longer reserved only for the Wiz Khalifas and Jack Herers of the world.

For each competition, we now have 1,500-2,500 Judge Kits available across the state. Judges from all walks of life have lined up before the opening of their local dispensaries to be the first to get their Judge Kits. With categories ranging from Indica Flower to Sativa Flower, Vape Pens to Concentrates, and Edibles to PreRolls, there’s something for every cannabis enthusiast. Each Judge Kit comes with a hefty variety of samples from the top brands in each state, all of which judges can score their products 1-10 on Aesthetics, Aroma, Taste, Effects, Burnability and other criteria.

For example, most Flower kits have (28) one-gram entries for a full ounce, broken down into 28 tasty samples to experience. Each kit is complete with the competition samples and a scorecard that gives each judge an access code to the High Times Judge Portal (CannabisCup.com/Judge), all of it contained in a swaggy High Times Judge backpack that you can rock foryears to come. Ifyou haven’t been a judge in the past because you were never selected, now is the time to get in on the action. Visit CannabisCup.com/ Preregister to get updates.

In just under two years since its inception, the Cannabis Cup People’s Choice has toured from Oklahoma to Michigan, Illinois to California, and has launched the Cups into new States like Arizona and Massachusetts for the first time in the Cup’s 35-year history. As other states have continued to embrace cannabis legalization, High Times will be supporting them along the way, ready to host even more Cannabis Cups.

On April 20,2021 in Michigan, crowds of judges lined up early to be the first to get their hands on their beloved Judge Kits, which varied between 13 different categories. Local community favorite, LocalGrove, came out on top with 1st Place wins for Indica Flower, Hybrid Flower, Medical Flower and Medical Pre-Rolls for their MAC1 and Runtz strains, with culture-driven cannabis company, Heavyweight Heads, stealing 1st Place in Sativa Flower for their Orangutan buds.

For the first-ever launch in Arizona, the Cup brought to light the fact that consistency across states is crucial. Alien Labs, who came off of recent SoCal wins, brought their talents to the state of Arizona and took home 1st Place for Indica and Sativa Flower for their Kryptochronic and Melonade varieties, respectively, plus Gelato 41 Pre-Rolls. Meanwhile, Connected rings in 1st Place Hybrid Flower for Gushers. For all of our concentrate-lovers out there, look no further than Shango’s Alien Cookies Live Rosin or Item 9 Labs’ Black and Blue Kush Vape Pen. Hungry? Snack (carefully) on Baked Bros’ Stoney Gummies or Ediquette Edibles’ Hazelnut Tmffles, which one judge describes as “out-of-this-world indulgent.”

Up in the hills of Northern California where cannabis has a long-standing history, legendary brands and new brands alike took their place on stage. Tenured winner, Sovereign, reigned supreme with 1st Place Hybrid Flower for MAC, while Atrium Cultivation won 1st Place Indica Flower for Juice Z, and Garcia Hand-Picked plucked out 1st Place Sativa Flower for their Super Lemon Haze.

Returning to the wild west of Oklahoma at summer’s end, we saw huge improvements in quality of product from 2020 to 2021. Small family operation, Icy Melts, tookhome 1st Place fortheir Cart Creek Hash Rosin Stix, while Texoma Labs clocked in on top for Pre-Rolls with their Dirty 30’s joints. Desert Extracts’ Slow Burn and Releaf Extracts took home 1st Place Indica Concentrates and Sativa Concentrates, respectively, and none other than Cicada Labs x Jubel Exotics collabing for the 1st Place Non-Solvent Concentrate, DK Smash Live Rosin Batter. To top it off, F5 Farms takes home 1st Place Sativa Flower, Phresh Harvest wins Hybrid Flower, and newcomer Gas Giant wins 1st Place Indica Flower for Oklahoma’s 2021 Cup.

With another inaugural launch into a new state, the People’s Choice Cup found top-ranking products in the OT Commonwealth of Massachusetts. With one of the biggest showings of judges on the day of on-sale, we knew Mass was ripe for the Cup. Priding themselves on pioneering authenticity, Happy Valley impressed the crowds with 1st Place Hybrid and Sativa Flower wins, while Bountiful Farms takes 1st Place Indica Flower, establishing a new standard of excellence in the market. For the Pre-Roll enthusiasts, Nova Farms packs major heat with their Southie Sundae Infused Blunt. Quality concentrates and oils anyone? Rhythm takes 1st Place Concentrates, while Church and Insa bring home 1st Place trophies for Indica Vape Pens and Sativa Vape pens, respectively. See the rest of Massachusetts’s firstever Cannabis Cup winners at Cannabiscup.com. Big thank you to our partner, NETA, for making all of this possible from compliance to logistics.

As the leaves changed colors in Illinois, it was time for the Cup’s 2nd calling to see who’s been hard at work in the past year. Remember when Revolution Cannabis won six out of seven awards in 2020? That seems to be fueling some fierce competition in the State. Backing up their previous sweep, Revolution takes home 1st Place trophies for Indica Flower, Sativa Flower and Concentrates, plus four other awards, but Triple 7 came in hot with 1st Place Hybrid Flower, NuEra with the highest-ranking Pre-Rolls, and Select taking the cake with their Ray Charles Elite Live Resin Vapes. Bedford Grow stole the Edibles show with 1st Place in both Gummies and Non-Gummies categories. We love watching this market develop with new winners every year.

Last but not least of 2021, Cannabis Cup Nevada judges are off to the races on judging at the time of writing this. We’re thrilled to see the results unfold and announce the winners at the end of 2021.

Overall, the Cannabis Cup People’s Choice saw in its second year atotal of 1,220 entries across 366 unique brands. 70 Cannabis Cup trophies and 140 medals will have been received by master cultivars, processors, and manufacturers that have earned their stripes and can indulge in the fruits of their labor. Over 12,000 Judge Kits were distributed across all competitions where judges went hard at work to test samples and provide scores and feedback on all products, all of which go back to the competing brands so they can see direct consumer feedback on their products. There is never any tampering with scores or reviews, so judges will always truly determine the winners, and competitors will receive all judge feedback—whether wonderfully positive or brutally negative.

The Cannabis Cups are for consumers to learn about all of the products they have access to and to determine who is the best. They are also for the brands to learn more about their customer base, improve upon their products and to expand the success of their businesses. We will continue to plan and execute Cannabis Cups in territories where it is legal, and continue to shine a light on the Cannabis Cup-winning brands around the world in 2022 and beyond.
