Three Cannabis-Impaired Driving Myths

What are three cannabis-impaired driving myths? In a piece for Farmers Forum, James Pascual reports that drug-impaired driving charges have more than doubled since Canada legalized cannabis.  Of course, the “significant increase in the prevalence of drug use” in drivers includes alcohol and prescription medicines. As well, plenty of people were driving on cannabis before. The difference is now police have the tools and training to look for it. Pascual’s article is heavy on opinion and light on facts. For example, he […]

Cannabis Industry Sues Canadian Banks

The cannabis industry is suing Canadian banks. Canada’s legal cannabis industry has launched a class-action lawsuit against Canada’s large cartel of banks. They allege the banks have discriminated against them by arbitrarily closing accounts and denying services and access to credit. Included in the class action are “all individuals or corporations that, directly or indirectly, do business with the major defendant banks and who are involved in the legal cannabis industry since October 17, 2018,” says the press release. The […]

Can Drugs Hijack Your Brain?

With legal cannabis across Canada and drugs like fentanyl and heroin decriminalized in British Columbia, the question remains: can drugs hijack your brain? It’s an all-too-common belief among so-called “experts” and the general public. The general idea is that drugs (or food, gambling, porn, etc.) can “hijack” the brain’s dopamine pathways and essentially compel you to behave a certain way. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in the brain’s reward system. The brain releases it in response […]

Make Downtown Great Again

How can we make downtown great again? In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of empty storefronts in many downtown areas. Many North American cities have their fair share of empty skyscrapers. Even in small towns, main streets have become desolate wastelands, with, in some areas, crumbling buildings and overgrown weeds choking the pavement. Our cities have become skeletons: empty storefronts and abandoned buildings like the bones of a long-dead beast. Many of us live […]

Medical Cannabis Growers Have Privacy Rights: Federal Court

A Canadian federal court has ruled that medical cannabis growers have privacy rights. This ruling comes after a lengthy battle where a couple of journalists tried to get Health Canada to disclose the location of medical cannabis growers. Once upon a time, the government regulated medical cannabis through the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR). Under the MMAR, patients could grow their own cannabis plants or have someone designated to do it for them. In 2013, the government replaced the MMAR […]

Canopy to Close Hershey Facility

Canopy Growth Corp will lay off 800 employees as part of a restructuring plan that includes closing the iconic Hershey Facility in Smith Falls, Ontario. The layoffs will impact 35 percent of its workforce and take place over the next few months. David Klein, Canopy Growth’s chief executive, said in a statement to the press: “We are transforming our Canadian business to an asset-light model and significantly reducing the overall size of our organization. These changes are difficult but necessary […]

Gun Ban for Cannabis Users Unconstitutional: U.S. Judge

A U.S. judge has ruled a gun ban for cannabis users unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Patrick Wyrick made the ruling on February 3rd, 2023. It began when Lawton, Oklahoma, police arrested Jared Michael Harrison in May 2022 during a routine traffic stop. They searched his car and found a loaded revolver and cannabis. Harrison worked in the state’s legal, medical cannabis industry but lacked proper paperwork. Over the next eight months, Harrison’s lawyers would argue that the government violated their […]

How to Debunk Alleged Cannabis Harms

How can you debunk alleged cannabis harms? If people with PhDs say cannabis is harmful, should we accept that? Or are these “public health” concerns more akin to proclamations by the Church? Donald Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill five years ago that legalized many cannabinoids, including CBD. Since then, it’s been a wild west of a market. Some sketchy manufacturers will produce delta-8 THC in not-so-legitimate ways, leading to poisoning and even death. This has worried the “progressive” busybody […]

Health Canada on Extracts vs Edibles

Where does Health Canada come down on extracts vs edibles? Last week, Canada’s federal bureaucracy caught the cannabis industry by surprise. Some licensed producers have been marketing “chewable extracts,” which Health Canada says are actually edibles. In an email to CLN, a Health Canada spokesperson said: “Health Canada has identified edible cannabis products erroneously being classified and marketed as cannabis extract products. These non-compliant products do not meet the controls in the Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations which serve to mitigate against public health […]

FDA Will Not Regulate CBD

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will not regulate CBD after a “careful review” of the subject. Instead, the FDA is asking Congress to create a regulatory system that balances “risk” with access to CBD products. This announcement hasn’t changed the status of CBD products, which are legal but not regulated as food or dietary supplements. Some businesses were disappointed to hear that the FDA will not regulate CBD. Many people associate the federal bureaucracy with consumer-friendly standards and […]
